Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum (Smithsonian Institution)

Dia Art Foundation

Dyckman Farmhouse Museum
4881 Broadway at 204 St, Manhattan
The only remaining Dutch Colonial farmhouse in Manhattan, rebuilt in 1785 due to occupation by both armies during American Revolution.
Contains a collection of 18th and 19th century furnishings and objects of the Dyckman family.

El Museo del Barrio

Major U.S. Latin American cultural institution is the only U.S. museum of Puerto Rican arts and culture.

Ellis Island

New York Harbor, Manhattan
By ferry from Battery Park. This was the entry point for more than 11 million immigrants from 1892 to 1954. The main halls have been restored as a museum.
 
Federal Hall National Memorial
26 Wall St, Manhattan
Site of Washington's inauguration in 1789, the memorial's exhibits illustrate historic events, such as the drafting and adoption of the Bill of Rights.

Fraunces Tavern Museum
54 Pearl St, Manhattan
Site of Washington's farewell address to his troops, the museum explores the history and culture of 18th and early 19th century America.

Frick Collection

Garibaldi-Meucci Museum

Home of Antonio Meucci, early inventor of working telephone (before Alexander Graham Bell). Giuseppe Garibaldi, unifier of Italy, spent forced exile here (1850-54).

The Grey Art Gallery at New York University

Guggenheim Museum

Historic Richmond Town
441 Clarke Av, Staten Island
New York's vibrant heritage comes alive at this 100-acre site. Many of the 27 buildings spanning three centuries are authentically restored and furnished.
 
International Center of Photography
This is New York's only museum devoted exclusively to photography.

Intrepid Sea-Air-Space Museum

Jacques Marchais Center of Tibetan Art

Serene temple-like building houses one of largest exhibitions of Tibetan art in the Western Hemisphere.

Japan Society Gallery

Jewish Museum

King Manor Museum
Jamaica Av btw 150 and 153rd Sts, Queens
Home of Rufus King, delegate to Constitutional Convention, 1787, who played an important part in forging the Constitution.
He was noted for his antislavery stance throughout his political career.

Lefferts Historic House
Prospect Park, Brooklyn
One of the few surviving Dutch farmhouses in Brooklyn, furnished to reflect daily life in the 1820s.

Lower East Side Tenement Museum

This "living history" museum is devoted to the urban immigrant experience.

Maritime Industry Museum
SUNY Maritime College, Pennyfield Av

Merchants House Museum

National Academy Museum & School of Fine Arts

Located in one of Fifth Avenue's most elegant townhouses, the Academy displays a rich variety of painting, sculpture and other art exhibits.  The exhibition galleries and lobby of the National Academy Museum will be closed for renovations from July 2010 to September 2011.  While under renovation, the Academy will continue to host the evening roundtable discussion, “The Review Panel,” and the School will maintain a full class schedule.

Dutch colonial farmhouse is oldest surviving building in New York State, originally built in 1652. Restored period rooms, demonstrations of colonial crafts and Dutch holidays.

Poe Cottage
2640 Grand Concourse (at Kingsbridge Rd), Bronx
Last residence (1846-1849) of Edgar Allan Poe, one of America's earliest literary masters, generally acknowledged as the inventor of the modern short story form. House tour and audiovisual show bring to life Poe's surroundings.
